The 14th annual Award and Induction Dinner of The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame was held in New York City in 1983.
This year's eleven inductees included Alec Wilder, Stevie Wonder and Ervin Drake. Sammy Cahn received the Johnny Mercer Award, Howie Richmond was presented with the Abe Olman Publisher Award, Willie Nelson was given the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, and Margaret Whiting and Rosemary Clooney were co-recipients of the Hitmaker award. The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and publishers Abe Olman and Howie Richmond. The NAPM/SHOF is also devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases and scholarships.
